Magazines are always looking for writers, and if you have something of value to offer them, you could potentially see your magazine in the hot little hands of your niche target audience. While, as a writer myself, I truly do believe content creators such as writers should be paid their worth always, if you’re looking to get your business in front of people at no cost, this is most certainly an option to explore.

There are certain things to keep in mind when you decide to try to get your business published in a magazine, so we’ve explored the biggest dilemmas most small business owners face when trying to get their brand noticed. Writing a media release is a great step, but if you really want to get noticed – writing an article is for a magazine is an even better one. Read on to find out what you need to do to get your business and brand in a magazine, stat!

Write To The Reader – Not The Editor

It’s important to not get this confused – the editor does decide what to put in a magazine, and if you know what style of writing and content an editor likes, then great, definitely stick to it. But an editor is looking for someone who can write an article as if they are speaking directly to the reader.

The reader, ultimately, is the one who decides if they want to buy your product or not. A great media release is good, but this essentially is an advertorial piece to an editor and doesn’t provide much in the way of content. An editor’s main concern is what their reader will get out of this, and if it’s just a selling piece, they won’t be inclined to include it in a magazine unless you’re paying for space in it.

Content is king on all mediums these days, including magazines. If you can nail speaking to the target audience of a magazine, then you will make the reader, and the editor, very happy.

Don’t Try To Sell You or Your Business Too Much

Whilst you are looking to advertise your business in a way, you really want to be offering value through content to readers. There will be no need to tell them how great you are, when your content and material can speak for itself. Let your expertise speak for you.

One of the most important aspects of writing an article for a magazine, is making sure it is not a sales pitch. Editors will turn away content pieces that are just thinly veiled advertorial pieces, and then you’re back to square one. You can, however, mention your business in passing, but in honesty as an Editor I wouldn’t want a business mentioning it more than one or two times, and especially if it was not 100% relevant to the piece.

However, if you’re not too ‘salesy’ in your content, you’ll be rewarded plenty by most magazines with a chance to write a small ‘bio’ and about section, that can have information about you and your business, and links to websites and socials as well. That way, once people are blown away by your fantastic article, they can find out more information about you and your business there.

Know Your Topic Well

The biggest advertisement that you will be able to make through getting published in a magazine is by positioning yourself as an expert in your field. Ensure you captivate your readers with your great writing and engaging content, but you truly do want to show the reader that you know your sh*t. This is why, above all else, you should be providing good quality information the reader can take away and utilise. Readers may remember a well written article, but they might not remember yourv name. Provide them information on a topic you have set yourself to be an expert in? They will probably remember at least you and your business and seek you out for further information in that niche.

This is also why writing to the reader is so important. Ultimately, the reader will be the one who converts this article into a profit for you, and the best way is through providing information. Don’t be too cryptic or vague with your information either – provide high quality content and valuable information to the reader. Your article doesn’t want to get lost in the many other features a magazine may have, so you only get this one chance to make a lasting impression.

If you know your niche and target market well, you will know what topics interest them most, and what will get their attention. But don’t just write an article you think they want to read – you don’t, after all, want to write on a topic that you don’t really know a thing about. Research, stay factual, and provide high quality content – simple!

It may be daunting to think of writing an article for a magazine that can ultimately market your business, but it is totally possible, and many editors are happy to assist in the process if you shoot them a quick email. Magazines are a fantastic medium to get your business and brand in front of your target audience, so why wouldn’t you give it a shot?!
